‘Paper testing’ some of my App ideas with a random set of people.
Have been spending the last few days road testing some of the ideas I had for apps.
In general, I am less interesting in Games, but more so in informational apps or apps that have a specific task. That also seems to be the view of the possibly self-selecting group of friends and acquaintances that I got to look at my ideas. Most people I know are time-poor, and are seeking ways to make their lives easier.
Most popular of the apps - in this order.
Save the World Today (because people liked the idea of a graded, simple, task orientated app that offers practical options. The consensus seems to be that althought everyone wants to be ‘green’ , it’s hard to cut through the barrage of publicity of what’s actually worth doing. So.. an app that offers a ‘do-able’ task, with a very brief explanation, goes down well.
Audio Delivery App - which appealed to the trainers among my friends who wanted to offer something a little different, special, useful. I revealed it at a workshop on podcasting, and the feedback was good. Main reasoning being - it’s great to keep notes, but more memorable to be given the information in audio form. I can see this being successfully white labelled, and offered to trainers, HR for in house use - ‘Welcome to your new Job’ type app.
Music Roulette - was popular with radio colleagues who have to think of new things to say about the same music week in week out, year after year. So a randomiser fact generator was appealing.
Snowdon Walks app - was appealing. But I think probably beyond my capabilities and too expensive to produce. But, tourists to Snowdon, liked the idea of having a guide in their pocket. Especially useful for kids who are more likely to use their phones on a walk that adults. Downside is that there is little or no signal on the higher parts of Snowdon.
The game Steff’s Caff was leats popular. But regarded as a useful gimmick. Something to give to kids who are bored in the rain in the cafe.
So … going forward…
Focussing on Save the World Today and Audio Delivery Apps.
Further define mechanics of both
Create sample content (which is done in the case of the Audio Delivery).
Research suitable platforms - probably drag and drop, ready made.
Aim for a working model of one or other by January.
